7 Ways to Create a #StigmaFreeCLE

This article is posted in solidarity with NAMI Cleveland!

Have you heard about the #StigmaFreeCLE campaign? The goal is to end stigma around mental health and addiction in our community so that everyone can access treatment, feel supported and live their best life. We invite you to join us!

Here are 7 ways you can help end stigma in our community:

1. Talk about mental health and addiction. Talking about mental illness and substance use disorders will help grow community-wide understanding. [Order your pin for $5 in our online shop!]

2. Learn about mental health and addiction. Mental illness and substance use disorders are complex medical conditions, and there’s always more to learn.

  • We have videos, fact sheets, articles, recommending reading and more on this site that you can access to find out more about mental illness. If you are a parent raising a child with mental illness,

  • Visit the NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness) website for some really great information about mental illness.

  • Mental illness and drug addiction often go hand-in-hand. Go to drugabuse.gov to learn more about substance use disorders. Learn more about dual diagnosis or comorbidity substance use disorders (mental illness with drug abuse) also on the drugabuse.gov site.

3. Listen without judgement! Everyone’s experience with mental illness and substance use disorders is different, and everyone’s story matters.

4. Share your story. Do you have a mental illness or substance use disorder? If so, one way you can help create a #StigmaFreeCLE is by sharing your story through our blog when you’re ready. It could help others. when you are ready, you can share your personal story on this blog (either written or through video). Simply send an email to sharemystory@twofacesofjane.org and we'll be in touch!

5. Reach out for help. Are you struggling with a mental health or substance use issue? You’re not alone and help is available.

  • National Suicide Prevention Helpline: Dial 988 to speak with someone who can help.

  • For Cuyahoga County Residents: Call Cuyahoga County’s 24-Hour Suicide PreventionMental Health/Addiction Crisis, Information and Referral Hotline: 216-623-6888.

  • For Lorain County Residents: Go to the Mental Health, Addiction and Recovery Board of Lorain County website, where you can find links to service providers and many other resources.

6. Support Others. If you know someone who is struggling with a mental illness or substance use disorder just be there to listen and support them in any way you can. You can also join a support group!
